Welcome to Vanto — patient recruitment, end to end.

CNS clinical trial recruitment

Central Nervous System (CNS) studies are some of the most important trials in medicine, and some of the hardest to enroll. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, migraine and major depressive disorder affect how people think, move, communicate and make decisions. Recruitment plans that work for other therapeutic areas often fall short here, because the people a CNS study needs to reach face barriers that a generic campaign never addresses.

Why CNS recruitment is different

A strong CNS recruitment strategy starts by acknowledging what makes these populations distinct:

  • Complex eligibility. CNS protocols often define disease stage, symptom severity, medication history and biomarker status in precise terms. Many interested people are not eligible, and many eligible people do not know a study exists.
  • Cognitive and communication considerations. Memory, attention, mood or speech can be affected by the condition itself. Information has to be clear, calm and repeated in more than one format.
  • Stigma and disclosure. Neurological and psychiatric diagnoses still carry stigma. Some people are hesitant to respond to an ad, or to talk about symptoms with someone they have never met.
  • Study partner requirements. Many CNS studies require a caregiver or study partner who attends visits and reports on the participant. Recruitment has to work for two people, not one.
  • Demanding screening. Imaging, cognitive testing, lumbar punctures or long screening visits can discourage participation if they are not explained early and honestly.

Building a CNS-ready recruitment plan

1. Start from the protocol

Translate the inclusion and exclusion criteria into a short, plain-language prescreen. The goal is to identify likely candidates quickly without asking people to share more than they need to at first contact. Every question should map to a criterion that genuinely affects eligibility.

2. Go where patients and families already are

People living with CNS conditions are often connected to neurology practices, pharmacies, primary care physicians, patient advocacy communities and caregiver networks. Digital advertising can reach them at scale, but trusted healthcare relationships are what turn awareness into a conversation.

3. Write messaging that respects the condition

Effective CNS messaging is specific about what the study involves, avoids overpromising, and speaks to both the patient and the people who support them. All recruitment materials should go through the appropriate IRB or ethics committee review before use.

4. Put people, not just forms, at the center of prescreening

Trained navigators can slow down, repeat information, involve a family member when the participant wants that, and recognise when someone is not ready yet. A short, respectful call often does more than a long online questionnaire.

5. Protect the handoff to the site

The time between a qualified referral and the first screening visit is where many CNS candidates are lost. Prompt scheduling, reminders, clear directions and a named contact at the site help interest turn into a completed visit.

Measure the whole funnel

Lead volume alone says little about recruitment quality. Track each step: responses, completed prescreens, qualified referrals, scheduled visits, screened participants and randomized participants. Reviewing screen-failure reasons regularly shows whether outreach, messaging or prescreen questions need to change.

How Vanto can help

Vanto brings together targeted outreach, human engagement, and patient support to help move qualified participants from first contact to site handoff. If you are planning or rescuing enrollment for a study like this, tell us about your trial and we will look at where our approach can support your recruitment strategy.
